New Delhi [India], December 2 (ANI): Congress MP Manish Tewari on Monday lashed out at the Union government for “deliberately” avoiding discussion on issues being raised by opposition parties, especially on the Adani indictment. He accused the government of not wanting the Parliament to run, adding that the responsibility to run the House was on the government.
The government should accept the adjournment motion notices being submitted by the opposition, Congress MP Tewari said, adding that the indictment by the US court of Adani had connotations beyond just one company.
“It’s extremely unfortunate. The government should accept the adjournment motions of the opposition. After all, the indictment by the US courts of the Adani conglomerate has a larger significance and connotation beyond just one company and those connotations are – what are the signals that it sends about India’s business environment? Is it accentuated by extraneous considerations? If the American regulators could act, were the Indian regulators sleeping? Who regulates the regulator? It is only Parliament. Therefore, it is extremely unfortunate that the government deliberately does not want a discussion. They don’t want the house to run. The responsibility to run the house is on the government,” Tewari told ANI.
The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned on Monday, the fifth working day of the Parliament Winter Session 2024, amid protests and slogans in both houses by opposition parties seeking discussion over the Adani issue, violence in Manipur and Sambhal.
Both Houses were adjourned for the day after they reconvened at noon following adjournments since the sessions began at 11 am.
Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 20 notices received under Rule 267. The Chairman referred to Murphy’s Law, which states that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
He said, “It appears that there exists a deliberate effort to actualize Murphy’s Law to impede this House’s proper functioning.”
This comes after the opposition leaders including Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Monday morning moved an adjournment motion notice to discuss the need for investigating allegations levelled by the US Justice Department against Billionaire Gautam Adani in connection with “bribery and corruption.” He cited “public interest” as the justification to move the adjournment motion.
Meanwhile, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Tiruchi Siva also filed an adjournment motion notice in Rajya Sabha to discuss the ongoing violence in Manipur.
The DMK Rajya Sabha MP moved the motion under rule 267 (Notice of Motion for Suspension of rules) with the intention to urge the government to address the Manipur issue. Tiruchi said that the Manipur violence has claimed more than 250 lives and it was crucial to find a solution to the crisis.
Opposition members have been continuously pushing to have a discussion on the floor on the Adani issue, Sambhal violence and the Manipur situation, raising slogans in the Parliament.
The first session of the Winter Parliament commenced on November 25, with both Houses getting adjourned fairly early due to disruptions. The winter session will go on till December 20. (ANI)
