New Delhi [India], April 23 (ANI): Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday strongly condemned the killings of tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, stating that the attack was an assault on the unity and integrity of India. He said that this was a direct attack on the Indian state and had shocked the entire nation.
“The dastardly killing of innocent, unsuspecting tourists by terrorists in Pahalgam yesterday around 2:30 PM has deeply hurt, shocked, and saddened us all. The Congress Party unequivocally condemns this cowardly act of terror and those responsible for it in the strongest possible terms. This attack is a direct assault on the unity and integrity of our nation,” Kharge posted on X.
Advocating for collective resolve, the Congress chief opposed partisan politics and said that justice must be ensured for those who lost their lives.
“This is not a time for partisan politics. It is a moment for collective resolve to ensure justice for those who lost their lives and for their grieving families, by bringing the perpetrators of this terror attack to justice,” Kharge said.
We also expect the government to hold discussions with all political parties to address the challenge of terrorism in a spirit of consensus once the necessary actions have been taken and full information has been obtained. They should call an All-Party meeting and take some advice. This is not politics, and we don’t want politics in this situation.
Urging the central government to hold discussions with all political parties once the necessary actions have been taken, Kharge said that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) would meet tomorrow to discuss the deadly terror attack.
“We also expect the government to hold discussions with all political parties to address the challenge of terrorism in a spirit of consensus once the necessary actions have been taken and full information has been obtained. They should call an All-Party meeting and take some advice. This is not politics, and we don’t want politics in this situation,” the Congress president said.
Kharge informed that the Pahalgam terror attacks, where terrorists killed several tourists and injured many, was the most “outrageous” attempt by terrorists and separatist forces since the Chittisinghpura massacre of 2000.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday reviewed the security situation at the site of the terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow. He first took an aerial stock of the region as he arrived at the site by helicopter, descending onto the meadow now bearing the scars of violence, earlier in the day.
Amit Shah walked around the area amid tight security and was briefed by top officials on the current situation and ongoing operations in the area.
Tuesday’s incident is considered one of the most serious attacks in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The government is yet to release an official count of casualties.
Meanwhile, a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team also arrived at the attack site to join the probe and assist the Jammu and Kashmir Police on the matter, which is considered the deadliest assault on civilians in the region in almost twenty years.
The NIA team is expected to conduct a thorough assessment of the attack site, collect forensic evidence, and help in identifying those responsible for the carnage. (ANI)
