Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 22 (ANI): Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, reached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Kolkata on Thursday morning regarding the ongoing probe into the alleged rape and murder case of a trainee doctor.
Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the West Bengal Health Department cancelled the appointment of Prof. Sandip Ghosh as the Principal of National Medical College & Hospital.
Ghosh had resigned from his position as principal of RG Kar Medical College, alleging defamation on social media following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital premises.
The rape and murder of the trainee doctor has sparked nationwide protests.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and constituted a National Task Force to recommend guidelines to ensure the safety of medical professionals. A CBI investigation into the matter is underway.
Earlier, a team of the CBI arrived at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and conducted a thorough check of the former principal of the institute.
Earlier, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose paid a visit to the family of the victim.
“I came here straight from Delhi to meet the parents (of the deceased) and to understand their sentiments. They told me certain things. I would keep them confidential now. Based on the information that I have, I will write a letter today and send it to the Chief Minister in a sealed cover. I will discuss the rest of the things with you later,” Ananda Bose said.
The top court said that it is deeply concerned about the safety of doctors across India. “If women cannot go to work and be safe, we are denying them the basic right to equality. We have to do something” the court said.
The top court also asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a status report on the status of the investigation in the rape case. Also, the court asked the West Bengal government to file a status report on the mob attack incident that took place at the RG Kar hospital on August 15.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
